Harpinder Walia

Harpinder Walia, aged 50+, embarked on a career change with the goal of making a meaningful impact on the next generation. Having spent years in the private sector, securing international contracts in the power and petrochemical industries, Harpinder gained valuable insights into different cultures through extensive travel. After a long career in the corporate world and raising a family, the time was right for a new challenge—one that would allow Harpinder to give back to the community and play a part in shaping the future.

Inspired by a strong belief that “teaching is a great way to keep learning,” Harpinder’s decision to teach was deeply rooted in a passion for education and a desire to help young people succeed. The importance of providing children with the best possible start in life had always been a priority, and when Harpinder’s children left home, it became the perfect opportunity to pursue this long-held ambition.

Maths became the subject of choice, thanks to the solid foundation Harpinder received from exceptional teachers at Jesuit schools in India. The National Mathematics and Physics SCITT programme banner frequently caught Harpinder’s eye, and the ongoing media discussions about the shortage of maths teachers in the UK further spurred the decision to take on this challenge. Recognizing the importance of maths education in securing future success for students, Harpinder felt called to make a difference in this crucial field.

The decision to enroll in the School Direct (PGCE/School Direct) ITT programme at The OAKS was driven by the structured and supportive environment it offered. The programme provided the perfect blend of professional challenges and guidance, equipping Harpinder with the tools needed to become an effective and skilled teacher. The OAKS’ professional tutors, alongside the placement schools, offered a wealth of knowledge and a caring support system, helping Harpinder grow and thrive as a trainee teacher.

Preparing for the teaching journey was less about expectation and more about embracing the experience. Harpinder attended an open day at a local school to explore whether teaching was the right fit and immediately felt a connection. The opportunity to work with students and help shape their learning path resonated deeply, and there was no turning back.

In the classroom, Harpinder believes in setting high expectations for every student while providing them with the motivation and encouragement they need to succeed. For Harpinder, teaching isn’t just about subject knowledge; it’s about instilling values like good manners, tolerance, and community involvement. The aim is to shape responsible, well-rounded individuals who understand what truly matters in life.

The OAKS programme stood out for its comprehensive approach, from immersive school placements to hands-on subject expert days. The combination of rigorous academic content, supportive mentors, and enriching extracurricular experiences provided Harpinder with a solid foundation for a successful teaching career.

Looking ahead, Harpinder is excited about the sense of freedom that comes with being an Early Career Teacher (ECT), free from assignments and ready to focus entirely on teaching. In the next 5-10 years, Harpinder hopes to continue making a difference in the lives of students, driven by the belief that helping even one child learn something new each day is a success. Inspired by a quote from a beloved football manager, Harpinder’s goal is clear: “It’s not important what people think when you come in; it’s much more important what people think when you leave.” With a wealth of experience and a passion for lifelong learning, Harpinder is dedicated to making a lasting impact in the classroom.
