Jayne Startin-Bailey
Jayne Startin-Bailey, aged 22, began her journey into education with a passion for creativity and a desire to make a positive difference in young people’s lives. Growing up in Staffordshire, Jayne’s love for crafts and baking shaped her path, leading her to pursue a degree in Bakery and Patisserie at university. It was during this time that she noticed a worrying gap in basic life skills, particularly in cooking, among young people. This observation, coupled with a growing concern that creative subjects were being undervalued, inspired Jayne to turn her focus towards teaching.

Jayne’s decision to pursue a career in education was greatly influenced by her own experiences as a student. Her Art and Design Technology teachers played a pivotal role in nurturing her creativity, fostering a love for learning that she now hopes to pass on to her students. Additionally, her role as a scout leader exposed her to the joy of teaching and the fulfillment it brings, further solidifying her aspiration to become an educator.
Her passion for teaching Design Technology (DT) is rooted in the practical, hands-on nature of the subject, which Jayne finds enriching and dynamic. For her, DT offers variety and encourages creative problem-solving, qualities she believes are essential in helping students develop real-world skills. Jayne is determined to show her students the value of creativity and to inspire them to see its importance in their everyday lives.
Choosing the School Direct – Non-salaried route at Ormiston NIOT was a clear choice for Jayne, as the programme offered both a PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) within one year. The school-based nature of the course provided Jayne with the hands-on experience she desired, allowing her to immerse herself in the classroom environment and gain invaluable practical knowledge.
Throughout her teacher training, Jayne has benefited from the supportive network at Ormiston NIOT. From personal tutors to fellow trainees, the programme has offered guidance and encouragement at every step, ensuring she feels equipped to succeed in her teaching career. The comprehensive nature of the training, which combines educational theory with real-world application, has helped Jayne grow into a confident and capable educator.
For Jayne, teaching is about more than just imparting knowledge—it’s about building personal connections with students and helping them achieve their own individual goals. She believes that developing strong relationships is key to fostering a love for learning and encouraging students to push beyond their perceived limits.
Looking ahead, Jayne is eager to continue developing her skills as a teacher, with aspirations of settling into a supportive school environment. In five to ten years, she envisions herself as a confident, experienced educator, focused on going above and beyond for her students. With her passion for creativity and her commitment to making a positive impact, Jayne is set to inspire the next generation of learners, showing them that with the right guidance, they can achieve anything.
