Discover our comprehensive teacher training programme designed to empower and equip you for a successful teaching career.
ROUTES INTO TEACHING
To teach in state schools in the UK, you need to complete Initial Teacher Training (ITT) and gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). We offer two different training routes to suit different candidates. You’ll need to decide which option is best suited to your skills and career aspirations, including the subject you’d like to teach.
Read on to determine which pathway is right for you and compare these two options.
Fee-paying
All our courses are available through the fee-paying option. This is ideal for those who already hold an undergraduate degree and wish to train as a primary or secondary teacher. The course leads to QTS and a PGCE, validated by the University of Birmingham at no additional cost.
Training lasts 11 months (full-time) or 16-20 months (part-time), with five days a week for full-time and three to four days for part-time. You’ll start your training at one school and move to a contrasting school in the spring term.
Fees: £9,535 (full-time) or £7,145 per year (part-time). Bursaries up to £30,000 may be available.
Apprenticeship (PGTA)
The apprenticeship route is available for secondary teaching and is designed for candidates with at least 12 months of classroom experience. Trainees are employed by the school, which covers the course fees through a levy. An additional cost for PGCE completion is paid by the trainee.
The apprenticeship route lasts for 12 months, full-time only. Trainees will work towards gaining QTS while earning a salary on the unqualified teacher’s scale.
