Flying Start Week

We are thrilled to announce the successful launch of our ‘Flying Start Week’ across all Teacher Training campuses. Over 80 new trainee teachers have embarked on their exciting journey with Ormiston Teacher Training (OTT), marking the beginning of an incredible adventure in education.

Our trainees were welcomed by campus leads Amy Smith (Norfolk), Lesley Turner (Suffolk), Dave Da Silva and Andy Clifton (Staffordshire), and our Director of ITT, Kaye Patrick (West Midlands). Throughout this week, they have been immersed in a comprehensive induction programme as well as essential training sessions and planning and delivering lessons in collaborative groups. This experience is designed to prepare our trainees for the classroom, ensuring they are confident and ready to make a positive impact on their students.

We asked a few of our new trainee teachers what they thought of their flying start week and their thoughts on the year ahead:

Q – What was your top ‘takeaway’ from the Planning and Teaching session?

  • The Backwards Design – start with the lesson objective, establish success criteria and what learning activities might be used.
  • To take your time and use planning to your advantage when checking student progress.
  • The three steps that I need to think about and the criteria they need to meet. For example, a learning objective should identify a manageable goal that the student needs to meet. If this is not measurable, it is not a good learning objective.
  • Backwards Design = beginning with the end – make sure the lesson objective is manageable and measurable.

Q – What was the most enjoyable aspect of today’s training?

  • Meeting my fellow trainees and getting to know more about the course.
  • Having a wide scope of information over the course of the day kept it entertaining and enjoyable. It introduced us to key aspects of teacher training and what to expect.
  • The morning activity using the map to determine where people were from, it was a really good ice breaker to get the group talking and interacting.
  • The in-class learning from the campus leads and getting to know the members of the cohort.

Our trainee teachers will be embarking on their teaching journey in the year ahead. They will be fully immersed in a school environment, that will provide them with excellent hands-on experience and truly understand the job within its setting.

In addition, we as a trust aim to provide valuable opportunities for our trainee teachers, by allowing them to network across our trust of 42 schools and hopefully fulfil roles in one of our academies.

There is still time for potential trainee teachers to apply for September, please contact info@ormistonteachertaining.co.uk.
