Apprenticeship (PGTA).

Work towards QTS while earning a salary on the unqualified teacher’s scale.

About the course.

This route is ideal for those who already have at least 12 months of classroom experience. The apprenticeship route lasts for 12 months and is available on a full-time basis only. Trainees will work towards gaining QTS while earning a salary on the unqualified teacher’s scale.

You need to have a bachelor’s degree to be eligible for a PGTA. If you do not have one, we advise interested parties to explore teaching in further education or teaching in early years, as these pathways do not require you to need a degree and QTS.

Like other types of initial teacher training, PGTAs combine on-the-job training with theoretical learning. On a PGTA, you’ll usually be teaching in school for 4 days a week, with one day off to attend training with Ormiston Teacher Training’s central team. PGTAs can start at any point in the academic year, but the apprenticeship must last for at least 9 months.

The PGTA programme is funded through the apprenticeship levy and is completed over the course of one academic year, providing a sustainable and cost-effective route to QTS for both schools and trainees.

Applications for 2027 open 6 October.
