Morgan’s Teacher Trainee Blog – The Start of My Teaching Journey

Hi, I’m Morgan, and I’m thrilled to be on my journey to becoming a physics teacher through Ormiston Teacher Training, currently on placement at Ormiston Horizon Academy.

Education has always played a significant role in my life. Growing up in a family that fostered children, I saw first-hand the transformative impact education could have. These experiences nurtured my passion for teaching and inspired me to explore ways to create positive change in young people’s lives.

At 15, I discovered my love for teaching while working as a junior coach at my local rowing club. Guiding others and witnessing those “lightbulb” moments was exhilarating. This enthusiasm only grew as I pursued a degree in Education Studies, where I was inspired by incredible teachers who demonstrated the power of impactful teaching.

When the time came to choose my route into teaching, I applied to several programs, but Ormiston Teacher Training stood out. Its supportive and structured approach resonated with my goals, and I knew it was the perfect place for me to develop as an educator.

Like any new journey, the start of my training was filled with excitement and a touch of nerves. The flying start week and the initial training day were fantastic opportunities to meet my mentors and fellow trainees, setting the tone for the collaborative and supportive environment I would come to cherish. Visiting Ormiston Horizon Academy before my placement officially began was invaluable. It helped me get to know the school, its routines, and the wonderful team I’d be working with.

My first days on placement began with whole-staff training. These sessions were packed with helpful insights into the school’s systems and routines, plus practical rehearsals of classroom management techniques. It was a whirlwind of information, but it gave me a solid grounding before stepping into the classroom. The moment the pupils returned to school was a surreal and pivotal point in my journey. Seeing the students bustling through the corridors made everything feel real – I was finally a teacher in training.

From day one, the support from my mentors and colleagues has been incredible. Whether it’s providing guidance on lesson planning or sharing strategies to engage students, their help has been instrumental in my development. Taking on responsibilities gradually allowed me to build confidence and establish rapport with my students. By the time I taught my first lesson, I felt ready to take on the challenge.

Becoming a teacher is both challenging and deeply rewarding. There’s so much to learn—from classroom routines to understanding each student’s unique needs—but every moment has been worth it. I’m grateful to be part of such a fantastic team and excited for what’s to come. Collaborating with experienced colleagues and learning from their expertise has been inspiring, and I can’t wait to continue developing my skills. Each day brings new opportunities to grow and improve, I’m looking forward to embracing every step of this exciting journey of becoming the best teacher I can be.
