Jessica Haylock

At just 21, Jessica Haylock already knows the kind of teacher she wants to be – energetic, inspiring, and deeply committed to making a difference. As a recent graduate of the University of Lincoln with a degree in Sports and Exercise Science, Jessica is now embarking on her teaching journey through the Ormiston Teacher Training (OTT) programme. Her goal? To spark the same love for PE in her students that she discovered during her own school years.

For Jessica, teaching is more than a job…it’s a calling. As a former student of Pakefield High School and East Norfolk Sixth Form College, she credits her PE teachers for inspiring her path. Their passion and enthusiasm left a lasting impression, motivating her to pursue a career where she could have that same impact on young people.

Jessica’s love for sport has been lifelong – from excelling in BTEC Sport at school to coaching and gaining additional qualifications during her time at university, she has always felt a strong connection to PE & sports education. But it was whilst studying at university that the decision to teach became clear.

Finding the Right Route with Ormiston Teacher Training

When it came to choosing a training provider, Jessica did her research, and after weeks of exploring different routes and courses, she discovered Ormiston Teacher Training via social media – immediately knowing it was the right fit.

She chose the PGCE route, a non-salaried pathway that offered full classroom immersion from day one. “That was important to me – being in the classroom from the start, applying what I’d learned, and constantly reflecting and improving my practice.”

The support she’s received from OTT has already made a big impact. From clear communication in the lead-up to the course, to the reassuring Flying Start week that helped to settle her pre-course nerves, the programme has been built to help trainees succeed. Regular check-ins, quick responses to questions, and expert tutors at the Norfolk campus have made her feel confident and supported every step of the way she says.

Turning Passion into Impact

Jessica believes great teaching is about more than delivering lessons – it’s about creating moments that matter. “There’s nothing like seeing a student truly enjoy a lesson or gain confidence in something they once found challenging. That moment of pride they feel…I get to be part of that. And that’s what makes teaching so special.”

Jessica has big ambitions for her future in education. While her immediate focus is becoming the best teacher she can be, she’s also thinking ahead. “In 5-10 years, I’d love to have built up enough experience to become a Head of Year, or even Head of PE. I want to lead, to inspire others, and to continue growing as an educator.”

When asked about her future, she’s most excited about one thing: building relationships – Jessica comments on how she can’t wait to have her own class, create a culture of her own and be part of her students journey through school.

“I realised I didn’t just want to work in sport; I wanted to teach it, share it, and use it to shape young lives. PE is about more than physical activity. It’s about confidence, teamwork, resilience, skills that stay with you far beyond the classroom.”
