Karly Oxford

Karly Oxford, 38, is training to teach Design and Technology with Ormiston Teacher Training, bringing with her a wealth of life experience, creativity and a strong commitment to supporting young people.

After completing her degree, Karly built a varied career, working in retail before running her own business for 11 years while raising her family. These experiences helped her develop key transferable skills including organisation, resilience, communication and problem-solving – all of which now underpin her approach in the classroom.

“I’ve always wanted to guide and encourage others to believe in their potential and pursue lifelong learning,” she explains, reflecting on what ultimately drew her towards teaching.

From working parent to classroom teacher

Her decision to pursue a career in education was strongly influenced by her children’s experiences at school. Observing the positive impact that teachers had on their development inspired her to follow a similar path.

“Seeing how teachers supported and influenced my children made me realise how powerful that role can be,” she says. “I wanted to be in a position where I could make that same kind of difference.”

Karly’s passion for Design and Technology comes from her long-standing interest in creativity and practical problem-solving. She was drawn to the subject’s ability to bring ideas to life and equip students with skills they can apply beyond the classroom. Choosing the PGCE route allowed Karly to enter the profession through a structured and supportive pathway, combining academic study with hands-on classroom experience.

“I wanted a route that would give me practical experience while still supporting my development,” she explains. “The balance between theory and practice has been really valuable.”

Karly first discovered teaching as a potential career after seeing a ‘Get Into Teaching’ advertisement, which led her to attend an open event with Ormiston Teacher Training. The experience gave her the opportunity to explore her options and speak directly with providers. Preparation for the course drew heavily on her previous experiences. Managing a business and raising three children provided a strong foundation in patience, organisation and communication, while attending events and researching the profession helped her feel ready for the challenges ahead.

In the classroom, Karly focuses on building positive relationships and creating a supportive environment where students feel confident to engage and take risks.

“I try to create a space where students feel comfortable asking questions and developing their skills,” she explains. “Building those relationships is key to helping them grow in confidence.”

She believes her life experience plays a significant role in her ability to connect with students and understand their individual needs. By combining empathy with clear structure and encouragement, she aims to create an environment where all learners feel valued and capable. One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching for Karly is seeing students experience those breakthrough moments in their learning.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see a student understand something new and gain confidence in their abilities,” she says. “Watching them take pride in their work and realise what they can achieve makes it all worthwhile.”

“I’m really looking forward to helping students grow both academically and personally”

Why choose Ormiston Teacher Training?

Karly highlights the Ormiston Teacher Training programme as a key part of her development, particularly valuing the balance between theory and practice, as well as the sense of community among trainees.

“Every training day gives you something you can apply in the classroom,” she says. “It’s also reassuring to share experiences with others who are going through the same journey.”  Looking ahead, Karly is excited to continue building relationships with her students and creating a classroom environment that encourages creativity, curiosity and problem-solving.

“I’m really looking forward to helping students grow both academically and personally,” she says. “I want to create a space where they feel supported and confident to achieve their best.”  In the long term, Karly hopes to establish herself as an experienced Design and Technology teacher who has made a meaningful and lasting impact. Through her dedication, practical mindset and passion for supporting young people, Karly is already demonstrating the qualities of an inspiring and effective teacher…one who is committed to helping every student realise their potential.
