Toni Hughes

Before joining the Ormiston Teacher Training programme, Toni, 27, completed a degree in sport, exercise and nutrition. With a strong belief in the power of movement to support not only physical health but also emotional growth and confidence, she was drawn to a teaching career that allows her to share that passion with young people.

Toni’s decision to pursue teaching was heavily influenced by her own PE teacher, who served as a consistent mentor and source of encouragement throughout her school years. Inspired by that example, Toni now aims to offer the same level of support to her own students, helping them believe in themselves and reach their full potential.

As a trainee PE teacher, Toni is passionate about creating inclusive, engaging experiences that teach more than just physical skills. She sees physical education as an opportunity to build teamwork, resilience, and self-confidence – qualities that extend well beyond the sports hall.

Toni chose the school-centred route with the National Institute of Teaching (NIoT) and Ormiston Teacher Training Norfolk, a hands-on training approach that she discovered through her previous employment. In preparation for the demands of the profession, she has been actively developing her classroom management skills, observing a range of teaching approaches, and strengthening her subject knowledge. She brings a strong sense of purpose and commitment to her training.

Her efforts have already paid off – Toni has secured a role at a specialist provision school for September, where she looks forward to building lasting relationships with students and helping them develop a positive connection with physical activity. Her ambition is clear: to make a meaningful difference in students’ lives and to become a Head of Physical Education within the next 5–10 years. Toni’s journey reflects her belief that great teachers don’t just deliver lessons – they inspire futures.
